Abstract:
Objective To evaluate the quality indicators of newborn hearing screening in Chaoyang District, Beijing over the past 7 years from 2016 to 2022, and propose measures to improve the effectiveness of newborn hearing screening.
Methods The neonatal hearing screening data in Chaoyang District from 2016 to 2022 were collected through the Beijing Maternal and Child Information System. A retrospective analysis of primary screening rate, re-screening rate, and referral rate was conducted to calculate the related quality indicators and make comparisons with the national quality standard.
Results From 2016 to 2022, there were a total of 315 298 live births in Chaoyang District, with 306 101 newborns were screened in Chaoyang District, achieving a primary screening rate of 97.08%, exceeding the requirement of the national “screening program” (90%). Of these screened, 292 814 infants passed the primary screening, while 13 287 infants failed, resulting in a failure rate of 4.34%. The primary screening pass rate was higher than the requirement of “listening test intervention guide” (90%). There were 10 952 cases were recalled, with a re-screening rate of 82.43%, which was higher than the requirement of “listening test intervention guide” (80%). Of those re-screened, 2 160 cases failed the re-screening, with a failure rate of 19.72%. The number of referrals who failed the re-screening accounted for 0.71% of the total screening population, within the provisions of the “listening test intervention guide” (5%). A total of 1 445 cases were referred, with a referral rate of 66.90%. Finally, 735 cases were diagnosed with hearing loss, with a detection rate of 2.40‰.
Conclusion From 2016 to 2022, the initial screening rate of newborn hearing screening in Chaoyang District of Beijing has steadily increased, with screening reaching the requirements of the guidelines in all years. However, it is necessary to further strengthen the recall management of hearing screening and improve the referral rate of children with hearing loss.
