Abstract:
Objective To explore the effects of probiotics on early growth and development of very low birth weight infants.
Methods From May 2015 to May 2017, a total of 61 very low birth weight infants who hospitalized in neonatal department of Chongqing Women and Children's Health Care Hospital were selected as the subjects. The random double blind method was used to divide the subjects into two groups, including the experimental group and the control group. There were 30 cases and 31 cases in the experimental group and the control group, respectively. Both of the two groups received usual care and treatment. At the same time, the experimental group was also supplemented with probiotics (from enteral feeding until discharge). The general data, parameters of head circumference, length and body weight on the discharge day, inpatient days and restoration days of birth weight were collected. The growth velocity of head circumference, length, body weight was calculated according to the result.
Results There was no statistically significant difference in head circumference and length growth rate between the two groups. The weight growth velocity of the experimental group was higher than that of the control group.
Conclusion Oral probiotics may improve the growth velocity of weight among the low birth weight infants.
