Abstract:
Objective To understand the situation of reproductive health knowledge and service needs of female students in a vocational college in Beijing and to provide the evidences for the implementation of reproductive health education and services in school.
Methods A self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted anonymously in female students in a vocational college in Beijing. The contents of the questionnaire included knowledge of reproductive health, needs for reproductive health knowledge, reproductive health service demand and utilization. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze the general demographic characteristics, the correct answer rate of knowledge, and the needs for reproductive health knowledge and services. The chi-square test was used to analyze the differences in the needs for reproductive health knowledge and services among students with different age groups and different parents' education levels.
Results Among 805 students investigated in the research, 38.4% answered all of the five questions correctly. The question of "women can get pregnant even if having sexual intercourse once" was correctly answered by 89.3% students. Overall, 43.2% students were willing to know the information about sexual and reproductive health. The proportion of students, who hoped to get information about dysmenorrheal, pregnant and sexual organs, were 33.4%, 13.9% and 11.9%, respectively. About 31.2% of the students worried about the problems related to sex and reproductive health. Among the students, 27.5% had the needs of sexual and reproductive health service, 22.6% hoped to get the services about dysmenorrheal and dysmenorrheal. And, 12.7% of students had consulted on reproductive health-related issues.
Conclusion The female students had certain reproductive health knowledge, but the knowledge was not enough and needed to improved. The college should strengthen reproductive health education and provide targeted systematic service and consultation.
