Survey and analysis of healthcare professionals’ awareness of newborn congenital heart disease screening

  • Objective To explore healthcare professionals’ awareness of newborn congenital heart disease screening and its influencing factors, and to provide a basis for implementing effective health education and training strategies.
Methods A self-designed questionnaire developed by the research team was utilized to investigate the medical and nursing staff in obstetrics, neonatology, pediatrics and ultrasound imaging departments in all midwifery institutions in Jilin Province. The survey included general information, healthcare professionals’ understanding of congenital heart disease screening (10 items), and their knowledge about the application of congenital heart disease screening (5 items). One-way ANOVA and multiple linear regression analysis were used to identify factors influencing awareness.
Results A total of 1 297 healthcare professionals were surveyed, including 590 doctors (45.49%) and 707 nurses (54.51%). The overall score of healthcare professionals’ awareness of neonatal congenital heart disease screening was 73.80 ± 13.98, and the overall correct response rate of the applied knowledge was 20.68%. Univariate analysis revealed that both age and hospital level had an impact on the awareness of healthcare professional in screening for newborn congenital heart disease (all P < 0.05). Multifactorial analysis indicated that hospital level was an influencing factor of healthcare professionals’ awareness of neonatal congenital heart disease screening (P < 0.05).
Conclusion Healthcare professionals have an acceptable level of awareness regarding neonatal congenital heart disease screening, but their mastery of applied knowledge is poor, and their awareness is affected by hospital level. Focused technical training should be implemented in hospital of different levels to promote the orderly development of neonatal congenital heart disease screening.
