Retrospective analysis of clinical characteristics of 207 cases of neonatal hypoglycemia

  • Objective To analyze the clinical characteristics of neonatal hypoglycemia and to improve the clinicians' awareness of neonatal hypoglycemia. Methods The clinical data of 207 newborns with early neonatal hypoglycemia were collected from December 2015 to March 2017 in the neonatal wards of our hospital. The clinical characteristics of the children were analyzed and summarized.According to the ratio of 1:1, 207 newborns with normal blood glucose in the same period in the neonatal wards of our hospital were randomly selected as the control group. Results Statistical analysis suggested that premature delivery, cesarean section, neonatal asphyxia, neonatal infection, low birth weight, small for gestational age infant、gestational diabetes mellitus were the high risk factors of neonatal hypoglycemia. Among the 207 cases, there were 29 cases (14.01%) with single risk factors, 45 cases (21.74%) with two risk factors, 61 cases (29.47%) with three risk factors, 37 cases (17.87%) with four risk factors, 17 cases (8.21%) with five risk factors, 6 cases (2.90%) with six risk factors, 5 cases (2.42%) with 7 risk factors. The proportion of normal birth weight among middle and severe hypoglycemia newborns (142 cases, 27 cases) was 50.70% and 44.44%, repectively. The proportion of low birth weight among middle and severe hypoglycemia newborns was 39.44% and 48.15%, respectively. Conclusion ① There was nonpositive correlation between the number of high risk factors and the incidence of hypoglycemia. ② The birth weight may be related to the severity of hypoglycemia. ③ It is necessary to strengthen the monitoring of blood glucose among the neonatal with high risk factors and to take timely measures to correct hypoglycemia.
